Materials Needed

printouts of the material referenced below, poster board or large pieces of construction paper, student-selected art materials

Lesson Plan

Discuss the meaning of the word pollution. Ask students to tell some ways pollution can affect oceans.
Ask students to brainstorm things people can do to protect the oceans. Write their suggestions on the board.
Distribute printouts from the following sites:

Clean Ocean Action's Shore-Tips Series: 10 Tips for Boaters
Clean Ocean Action's Shore-Tips Series: 10 Tips for Shore Visitors
Have students read the printouts and compare information in the printouts with their suggestions listed on the board.
Divide the class into pairs. Tell students they are going to work together to create a poster with a slogan about one of the tips noted in the printouts. Encourage students to brainstorm ideas, be creative, and use a variety of materials in their posters.
Variation for younger students: Choose one of the printouts. Read the tips to the class. Have students choose one of the tips to illustrate on a poster.

Assessment

Have each group present its poster to the class and explain its choice and ideas. Evaluate the presentations and posters.
